Cyclone in Myanmar, leaving who knows how many dead, and hundreds of thousands of people homeless, hungry and vulnerable to the spread of disease.
Earthquake in China, killing tens of thousands, leaving thousands more homeless, leaving parents childless and children parentless. Now there's a very real threat of flooding from damaged dams giving way.
Wildfires in Florida. A week ago, some ten thousand acres had burned. With all the other big news, detailed information on these fires is hard to find right now. Arrests have been made, however, as it's suspected arson.
Tornados across the US, when tornado season hasn't even "officially" begun. Yesterday, a tornado believed to have been a mile wide flattened half a town in Colorado.
Wildfires consuming thousands of acres in California. Some 500+ firefighters battle to control it while hundreds (thousands?) evacuate ahead of it. Mudslides have also become a threat thanks to downpours in the same state.
Is it just me, or has the last month or so just been one enormous natural disaster? |

Holy GOD that hurt. I popped a cheez-it in my mouth and went to close my mouth, and it got stuck sideways and stabbed the roof of my mouth. Hard. I couldn't even move for a minute, just sat there with my mouth wide open, reeling in pain. It hurt so badly it actually made me nauseous. |

Holy smokes, I'm doing good this week in the dragon department! I got a two-color hatchling, my second and third dino egg, and two silvers! Whoohoo! *does an extremely nerdy dance*
In other news, I've managed to hurt my back. Lower back, to be specific. Pulled it, I think. Evidently I somehow did it in my sleep, because I went to sleep at one point and was just fine (though I'd slept funny on my neck so that was stiff), and woke up to my back being all seized up. I think it's the same spot I pulled a couple years ago while moving into the new apartment. Hurts like hell, and makes walking a bitch. Guess it's a good thing I don't have any very pressing errands to run in the next couple of days. Sheesh. |

Yay, nice big super attack with lots of shakes, spasms, uncontrollable muscle contractions, funny vision, had to remind myself to breathe much of the time... Not sure how long it lasted, but it was a while.
Oh, and I've still got my cold, or allergies or whatever it is. Majorly congested. Fun.
I need to run a couple errands, but I don't think I'm going anywhere today.
Sigh. |

So Wednesday I snagged my cartilage earring, right, gave it a good yank (hurt like hell). But it's not like that hasn't happened before, so I cursed and mostly forgot about it.
Then Thursday while shopping with Mom, it started hurting again basically out of the blue. I guess I bumped it or something. I started feeling at it with my fingers and commented to Mom, who suggested I take out my earring. At first I didn't, because it wasn't the first time I'd irritated a piercing and I figured it was no big deal, but a few minutes later it was bothering me so much that I took out the earring anyway. My ear was all swollen and my earring was way tight, and when I got the earring out, well, ew. So I pocketed my earring and, with the immediate pain relieved, went about my day. When I got home, I cleaned it up with my piercing cleaner stuff, noting the area around the hole was particularly swollen, but still not really thinking much of it.
So finally this (Friday) morning, I get up, go to the bathroom, look in the mirror, and note how red my ear is. Further investigation revealed a huge, hard knot bulging out from the back of my ear. It hurt, too. What the hell, I thought, has my cartilage deformed or something? oO
Anyway, wanting it to heal but not close up, I cleaned it again, and sterilized my earring, and gently--because it still hurt like a sunuvabitch--pushed my earring into the hole (not forcing it), from both the front and the back.
( If you're easily queasy, you may want to skip the detail here. )
But WOW what a difference it made. Doesn't hurt nearly as much with all that pressure relieved, and I was able to put my earring back in. It's no damned wonder it was bothering me! The knot is gone, now, and so is the pain. |

Obligatory eggies:
And now for the real entry.
Feeling better than yesterday, though still pretty blah. Got a headache. >.o
My obsession with vernal pool invertebrates is increasing. >>; I have three species of brine shrimp, and a freshwater species I'm waiting on. :3 I've found a bunch of other people online--with a lot of effort o_o-- that have the same interests. Not only are they interested, but some of them breed various other species, from fairy shrimp to clam shrimp to water fleas and triops, and a lot of trading goes on between the members of the community. Plus, I'm picking up tips on how to find my own little crustaceans out in the wild, and I can't wait to go hunting. I'm hoping to get a good look round the ponds the next time I'm at my folks' place; I'm pretty sure there aren't any fish in their ponds, so they're fairly likely to be full of critters. :3
Silly? Maybe. Adorable and fun? Totally. ^^;
Meanwhile, we've got storms here, again. Which actually ties into the above, since the rain will fill up the pools my little pets tend to appear in in the wild. I'm hoping I'll feel well enough one day this week to go explore a little. Gas is kinda expensive, but since I haven' t been driving back and forth to work, I think I can get away with one day of driving around country roads. ;) And at least it'll get me out of the house. Blargh.
I guess that's it for now, except to note that although I've been hungry, I've had like no appetite for a few days now. Although yesterday I somehow managed to inhale nearly an entire box of Cheez-Its in one sitting. I'm a little grossed out by that fact. >>;;; |

The dream was primarily Mighty Ducks. At one point I was even my own (male) character. I like him, and I haven't thought of the Ducks much lately, so this was pretty awesome.
But then it got weird. Okay, my dreams are always weird. But this was weird.
The Mighty Ducks were fighting Dragaunus' robotic minions. Nothing strange there. Pretty much a day in the life, really. Much of the actual battle was in my own, real neighborhood, only with a lot of insanely tall trees. Okay, still not that unusual.
Except that one of the main robot types they were battling were Daleks. No sign of Doctor Who.
More of the robots were badniks from Sonic the Hedgehog.
There was a scene where I was frantically choosing from among an array of wooden sticks to try and figure out which one was my wand. The name "Harry Potter" was spoken distinctly at this time.
Was that Hulk Hogan shushing me as we snuck down a darkened hotel hallway?
A rather epic fight took place directly across the street from the little church of Scientology a couple blocks away.
At one point I (as my character) collapsed, exhausted, on... the sales counter from the job I quit a few weeks ago.
For some reason, the Ducks' headquarters floated overhead. Coming and going involved a rope ladder. Never saw Sportacus, though.
Still trying to figure out where the trolls I had to chase off came from.
I woke up with Alice Cooper's (We're All) Clones stuck in my head. |

My irrational fear of construction cranes has just become a very concrete fear. No, really, look at this.
Yeah, you see that pile of rubble between those two buildings? A few minutes ago that was a four-story townhouse. It was completely obliterated by this falling 19-story behemoth.
Crane falls and crushes building in NYC, four dead Sun Mar 16, 2008 5:38am EDT
By Chip East and Claudia Parsons
NEW YORK (Reuters) - A giant crane fell and crushed a residential building in Manhattan on Saturday, killing four construction workers and injuring more than 10 other people, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said.
He said the crane "basically just flattened" a four-story townhouse with a bar on the lower level and damaged three other buildings. The bar was closed at the time.
Greta Welkhammer, a witness who was passing by on her bicycle, told local TV station NY1 that she looked up and saw the crane "literally split in half."
"I saw the crane crashing, splitting in half," she said, adding that she saw the building it hit "falling like a house of cards."
"Everybody was running, running; it was devastating," she said.
Bloomberg said the crane broke during a routine operation to extend its height by inserting a section and raising the top part of the crane. The bottom part of the crane fell and hit a 19-story building but nobody was injured there.
The top part of the crane, which witnesses said was at least 15 or 20 stories high before the accident, fell and flipped over, hitting and damaging three buildings as it fell and landing on the townhouse that was completely crushed.
Bloomberg said authorities were investigating the cause of the accident and emergency workers were still searching in the rubble for anyone who might be trapped.
He said the four people killed were construction workers, and that several more workers were injured. An additional 10 people were injured, three of them critically, Bloomberg said.
"Fortunately the bar was not open so there was either one or two people in that bar," he said. One person was rescued alive from the bar and workers were searching to check if the second person was in fact in the bar at the time.
"We are still looking for other victims potentially trapped in the rubble," Bloomberg said.
Cars on the street were buried in rubble, with one car flipped over on its side on 50th Street in Midtown Manhattan between 1st and 2nd Avenues.
Local TV station NY1 broadcast an amateur video taken shortly after the collapse that showed the building completely enveloped in what appeared to be a cloud of brownish dust.
(Writing by Claudia Parsons; Editing by Eric Walsh)
They're still looking from one construction worker, as well as two women on the ground that are unaccounted for.
I'd say I'm pretty well justified in my fear, now, yeah? |
